My one-line predictions
I present to you my one (or two) line predictions. Here we go!
Netflix vs. Blockbuster:
- Netflix pioneered unlimited on-demand movie and tv show consumption. They were the leader in the industry, and Blockbuster has been trying to catch up ever since. Finally, with rising gas prices, it just makes no sense to drive to a Blockbuster store to pick up a new movie, even if the option is there... I'd rather wait two days to get a new DVD and use Netflix's "Watch It Now" technology instead. Winner: Netflix.
- Okay, so technically UoS doesn't exist yet, but I have a gut feeling that if Blizzard beats CCP to the Ambulation patch (avatars that walk around space stations), then EVE: Online is going to be the big loser. So many times you hear about people trying out EVE, but quitting before two weeks is up, because it's so complicated. I'm STILL learning about the game 11 months into it, and that's crazy to me. Watch your backs CCP. Winner: UoS.
- Sorry Myspace, you've already lost. It doesn't matter how many "Facebook" features or new themes you add, Facebook has stolen your audience. And it's something Friendster learned the HARD way. The social networking site you visit most often is the one your friends also visit most often. Know how many friends of mine have cancelled their Myspace account? I have no idea, but I don't visit the site anymore. Winner: FB.
- This is tough, but let's give it a few thoughts using the recently announced models (iPhone 3G & Blackberry Bold). Both phones have 3G speed, built in WiFi and GPS capabilities.
The iPhone is smaller/thinner (+1). The BBB has a physical keyboard (+1). Say what you will about the touch-screen keyboard, I own an iPod touch, and typing on that thing is horrendous, and I'm quite the txt messenger. iPhone works flawlessly with the iTunes music store (+1). RIM needs to get on board with their own store, at least for applications, if not music. - BBB: Copy/Paste, Camera Flash, Replacable Battery, Push Email (+4).
- iPhone: Safari Browser, Media Playback, Slick Interface (+3). There are claims that the iPhone software update v2.0 includes push email, but unfortunately, it only works for SOME email providers: .Mac, Yahoo!, and Exchange. If you have Gmail, you're SOL unless you do some sort of forwarding trick to a Yahoo! account. Boo. (-1).
- Winner: BBB (5 points) vs iPhone (4 points). Yeah, I'm biased.
So say we all.
